Value for Money

McDonald’s and Domino’s Value For Money?

The reason McDonald’s and Domino’s does so well in India is because they offer value for money.

What I mean to say is that the general population can afford the food. The other day I saw a rickshaw driver with no passenger going into a McDonald’s drive through and that’s when I thought of conducting an experiment.

Which McDonald’s Fries should you order?

Small, Medium or Large?

At first, I thought it would be as easy as ordering one of each, then counting the number of fries and dividing by the price but it’s the weight we have to calculate. So, I waited for a time when I would order McDonald’s with my friends and they would agree to order one of each (small, medium and large). And finally, when that day came, I got an electronic weighing scale and all the fries in their respective containers and took the readings:

Small Medium Large
Weight (in grams) 89 100 119
Price (in ₹) 60 90 105

Now all that’s left to do is divide the weight by the price and see how many grams of fries you are getting per rupee.

For Small, 89g/₹60 = 1.48 g/₹

For Medium, 100g/₹90 = 1.11g/₹

For Large, 119g/₹105 = 1.13g/₹

All to 2 decimal places.

This means that small fries are by far the best and the most value for money and I am never ordering another medium or large in my life.

Of course, you might say that small fries are not enough quantity and you need at least a medium to fill your stomach but it’s much better ordering 2 small then. I noticed that the cost of 3 small and 2 medium is the same and you are getting a crazy 67g more with 3 small as compared to 2 mediums.

I agree that every McDonald’s might have a different price across cities and will have slightly different quantities but they won’t differ by a lot according to me and small will always still be the best.

Now let’s take a look at Domino’s.

Would you believe it if I told you that you are paying to remove toppings? Read that again. You are paying more to remove toppings.

Well, it is true.

The above is an order I would like to present where I added one Margherita (which everyone generally orders), one Farmhouse pizza (which my sister likes to order), one Golden Corn pizza mania (which I like to order), and one tomato pizza mania (what you should order) to my cart.

I have made sure that all of them are the same size and same crust. I also got this ridiculous pop up given below. Add more cheese to a cheese pizza for half the pizzas price? I don’t think so.

So, what I claimed to say was true indeed. You are paying 40 rupees more to remove tomatoes if you think about it.

So, what is the conclusion of all of this?

The conclusion is that we think we are getting value for our money in Dominos and McDonald’s when we order the regular items like medium fries and a margherita when they are actually ripping us off with these by charging us more.

Anyways these are just my views.

Comment if you would like to see my thoughts on Starbucks and Subway.

Vaccination in Mumbai

The Indian government has created this system called CoWIN for the vaccination of the country. CoWIN has a two-step process. Firstly, every Indian has to register themselves on CoWIN mandatorily and connect their Aadhar (something like a social security number). The second step is to book a slot at a vaccination centre. Now here is the problem, we are a country of over 1.3 billion people and the vaccines are limited, so whenever you try to book a slot, it will almost always show that all the slots are booked. And people have been trying for so many days without getting their slots booked.

My father thought of this brilliant idea of creating a portal where you can get your slot, guaranteed. Everyone will have to do step 1, but for step 2, people book their slot through his portal. So, he partnered up with Jaslok hospital (one of India’s top Hospitals) and launched the portal. He asked me to visit the vaccination centre for the first day and I sat at the registration booth and verified the people as they came in.

Since the start of the second wave, I wanted to do something big, something that will help others. It was because there was just so much negativity and death everywhere. I spoke to my friends about it as well but we could not get any bright ideas. I kept on thinking of visiting hospitals and helping them in any way possible and this was my chance.

My father was not in town for the other slot days so I took over. Every day from 1pm to 5pm, I was at the centre, helping out. Ticking names of registered people on the lists, giving them their vaccine forms, and making them stand in line. The doctors and other staff members know me very well now. There were instances where people who came to take the vaccine were telling me that they had been trying for 2 months but could not get a slot on CoWIN but were so happy to finally get vaccinated. I even helped fill out forms of people who could not write. When people who had not registered had come, I wrote their names on the back of the list and made sure even they got their vaccine. This worked because we always had a few who didn’t show up even after registering.
Vaccination

A vial has ten doses and once a vial is opened within a certain amount of time all the doses must be given, and if not, then the remaining doses go waste. So, I called up people from the list who registered and did not show up until we got all ten at the end of the day. And this is why the doctors appreciated even more.
vaccination

My father did not earn a single rupee in this whole process. He did it as a service for the city. My seniors told me to use the vacation to do internships and courses, but this felt more important to me. Just getting a smile from behind masks (I know it was there), and a thank you from hundreds of people on their way out was really fulfilling and satisfying.

If you live in Mumbai and need to get vaccinated, please log onto my father’s portal csr.tecogis.com and register yourself.

Free Money ?

Recently on TV, there was an advertisement of My11Circle in which from just 1 rupee the first prize is Rupees 1 Crore.

The criterion for winning is to make the best team of 11 out of 22 players that are playing on the given day in the IPL. If you make the best team, you win Rupees 1 Cr.

It’s that simple.

So, I thought to myself how can I guarantee a victory for myself. I mean what’s the total number of teams I needed to make, to make sure that one of them secures first place.

The total number of possible teams that could be made is simply 22C11 which comes to 7,05,432 teams, so about 7 lakh teams.

Now that is interesting, because somehow if I manage to make the 7 lakh teams, I guarantee myself a prize of 1 Crore. That’s a profit of about 93 lakhs per day and that’s insane. All that is left is to figure out a way to make the teams because its 1 rupee per team, so 7 lakh rupees and 1 Crore winning prize.

I am decent in using computers but not in programming. All I need is for someone to build a program to somehow make 7 lakh teams covering all possible options and in today’s world of programming and coding it shouldn’t be too hard. I just cracked the system.

But wait it gets better.

In every team you make, you need a minimum of 1 Wicket-Keeper, 3 Batsman, 1 All-Rounder, and 3 bowlers. This reduces the total number of possible teams to make. And after 2 hours of some complicated calculations, I found the exact number of possible teams which I don’t remember exactly but it was about to 2 lakhs.

So, 2 lakh possible teams and if I make them, I get a profit of 98 lakhs per match day. It gets to around 1 lakh teams if you are willing to risk not taking a few players in the team at all because you are confident that they will not play well but that’s Gambling and that’s a topic for another of my thoughts.

But then I started thinking, beating their system can’t be this easy. And then it struck me. One small addition to the team making process is going to cost me a lot of money. For every team you make there must be a captain and a vice-captain. The captain gets 2x points and the vice-captain gets 1.5x points. Now it may not seem like much but when you add this captain and vice-captain, we multiply the total number of possible teams with 11P2. 11P2 is 110. This means that now the total number of possible teams with the combination of captain and vice-captain is 2 lakh times 110 which is 2,20,00,000 (2 Crore, 20 lakhs). So now we invest 2 Crore, 20 lakhs with the return of 1 Crore and that’s not looking very good.

This is not looking at the fact that we won’t know the 22 players to choose out of until half an hour before the match starts and we have to make the teams before the match starts.
Nothing is free in life!

I became a little excited at the idea of this possibly working and got deviated from my school work. But I will take the positives from it. Who knows someday I might actually crack the system if I keep trying to think out of the box.
